I have been looking at the xpp3 and notice that PullParser is filled with
unusual code, including goto statements. What is up with that?

High efficiency and small binary size. Optimized code often breaks 'rules' of
good practice in order to wring out extra performance or smaller compiled
size. It's a hard balance to strike. XPP has proven that it's implementation
is worth it (look at the benchmarks for it's performance).
