I worked on Listing 6.1. When I tried to load it from
http://localhost/ws/helloservice1.asmx, the IE (mine is version 6) displayed
the entired source code as if it were in a text editor, instead of something
shown in Figure 6.1, p167 of your book. What is wrong?

Re: Web service problem

Hi Tom,

I cannot guess exactly what's wrong here but maybe I can suggest some steps
toward diagnosing the problem. It looks like ASP.NET is not installed
properly.

1. See discussion below figure 1. Do you see the WsdlHelpGenerator entry in
the config file? That's the entry that causes the proper page to display.
(The default entry should work.)

2. Try some of the simple ASP.NET examples at the beginning of chapter 8. Do
they work correctly?

3. Did you encounter any problem while installing the .NET SDK or Visual
Studio .NET? (Are you using a beta version?)

If no luck, you may have to reinstall .NET. It's a pain, but when in doubt,
etc...

Hi Fergal,

I tried you suggestions 1 and 2. Here are the results:

1. I saw WSDHelpGenerator.
2. I tried to load some example in Chap. 8, for aspx file, when I load any
*.asmx file, the browser only displays the source code. This is puzelling. For
Fig. 8.1, I only got the top part "Hello ASP.NET Application" and nothing
else.
3. my C# compiler is 7.00.9466 and .Net Framework is 1.0.3705. I do not have
visual .Net installed. When I install .Net SDK, I did not encounter any
problem.
4. It appears that the C# code in helloservice1.asmx is not compiled, linked
and run when it is loaded. I checked PATH, and found three "BINs" of .Net
Framework, .Net SDK and Visual Studio v7 are in it. I can compile and link C#
code in CMD window using csc.

Thanks.

Tom

Hi Tom,

Since neither aspx nor asmx apps are working, if I were you I'd reinstall. It
would be quicker, and more reliable, than digging into this.
