Is there anyway to remove an OrbitGroup from the universe once it has been
added or somehow destroy it? Does Swing 3D have any collision behaviors that
reposition the OrbitGroup if its position is inside the geometry of a loaded
VRML file? Any ideas on how I can reposition the OrbitGroup either before or
after it's created so that its position will be outside of a loaded model?

I guess... I should say my real objective is to have the ability to zoom in
and out when using an OrbitGroup.

In the second version of the book software take a look in the package
j3dui.navigate. There you will find OrbitCamera and OrbitCameraControl.
OrbitCamera combines an OrbitGroup and other actuators to form a complete
orbit camera. OrbitCameraControl is a default set of controls for an orbit
camera. Either use it as-is or take a look at how it uses the other groups to
offset the view relative to the OrbitGroup to achieve "zoom" (i.e.
look-from-offset along the Z dimension). You can see how these classes are
used together in the CameraNavigating example included with the second
release.

good luck
