Greetings;

A great deal of the spatial data available "out there" is provided in some kind of rectangular projection (for example, state plane, UTM, Albers...) and not in lat/lon.

It would be SUPER USEFUL to include some indication of how to scale and translate such information, which is not obvious given that it appears that scale() and translate() are projection methods.

Maybe there exists some function to work with such data but I haven't yet found it...

Yes, I'm afraid there's so much to mapping with D3 and other technologies that it would be hard to cover it all. There are whole books on mapping with D3 that might provide some help with this. Ultimately, you're going to want to get into GDAL (or at least a GIS package like ArcGIS or QGIS) if you're dealing with complex geospatial data transformations.
