Surely, a streamgraph works just like a stacked bar-chart, except that it has a continuous x-axis. One layer affects the position of the other elements, but not their areas.

In this case I think your confusion is between the mathematical term area versus the semantical term area. I just mean that they are drawn offset, so the drawing bottom and tops are based on the bottoms and tops of areas underneath them. I don't mean the literal calculated area is affected, of course.

Given that the context is a graph in which the area in each section has meaning, I think that that's how most people would interpret it. How about saying 'the position of the elements' is changed?
