Thank you for the effort on the book, it has being a good read so far.

I hit one problem though in chapter 2.3.2 the service is exposed as LoadBalancer, but that seems only to work on google.

At least for me it did not work with minikube which I believe would be the training platform of choice for many people. It would be good to add something about running it as NodePort.

Yes, you're correct. I'm aware of this and am planning to go over all the examples again, using minikube (I initially ran the examples on GKE and only later added minikube into the mix).

Regarding the LoadBalancer problem, as mentioned in the book, a LoadBalancer service is also a NodePort service, so you can access it through the node port (you don't even have to change its type).

I found that it works but it's simulated and you never get an extenal IP:

You just can get the external url to the service with minikube service --url helloswarm-http
A little footnote about this will be nice.

Yes, I've included a tip on using minikube service. It's in the newest MEAP update, which was released just hours ago.
