I recommend replacing the 2nd sentence above with the following sentence:

You won’t be able to because React ensures that the DOM stays in sync with the virtual DOM, which isn’t being updated and thus won’t let the DOM change (this is the scenario with the 'Your name' input control in Listing 2.6).
