Just a minor suggestion: You might perhaps point out somewhere (maybe in section 1.5) that D3 may require a <meta charset="UTF-8"> element in the header. (I forgot to include it, and was really puzzled to get an error "SyntaxError: Invalid character 'u8364'" in Safari.)

You're absolutely right, I should have mentioned this. You can either set your document to utf-8:

<!DOCTYPE html>
<meta charset="utf-8">


Or you can set the charset of the script to utf-8:

<script charset="utf-8" src="d3.js"></script>


Or you can use the minified script, which shouldn't have any utf-8 in it:

<script src="d3.min.js"></script>


I'll include that in Chapter 1 in the next revision. Thanks a bunch for noting this.
