We had toyed with the idea of recommending using "=" as the assignment operator in R, but feedback on our on forum convinced us how unpopular that would be. We look forward to sharing what else we learn from you on this forum. You can see the draft of what we had been thinking about (was once going to be an appendix of Practical Data Science with R, not it has been replaced by other advice): http://www.win-vector.com/blog/2013/04/prefer-for-assignment-in-r/ .

Re: Assignment in R
Most R tutorials (QuickR, Revolutions, Twotorials, etc) use only <- to denote assignment.

Will alternate assignment methods be mentioned in the book?

Re: Assignment in R
Alternate assignments will be mentioned. We will advise using <- for assignment (over = and ->smilie and we also have an example that uses <<- to move an error message out of a error-handler context and to where it can be used.
