We have been looking at how we should classify NoSQL data architecture patterns that are modeled after the original Google Bigtable system. Because HBase, Hypertable and Cassandra all model themselves on this system and because we think that a single "big table" is a nice way to visualize it we stuck with the term "Bigtable" in our pattern library. The term is very specific and precise.

It does seem like the trend is to now classify these systems as "Column Family" data stores. We don't like this name because it is not as accurate as an image of a single big table and it is easily confused with the term "Column Store" which is a different animal. But we are thinking of changing our classification name to be consistent with other systems.

Any thoughts?
