Just doing some research on HTTPS, and I came across this approach:

Paul Irish cites a bug with using // URLs in IE6 for why the GA code snippet doesn't use it:

But as for the book, we kind of skirted SSL entirely in the second chapter because it felt a little advanced. But, I'm thinking we should have a follow-up section at the end of that chapter that discusses it. We'd probably cover all ways of doing it, including //.
