Silly question ... is this really a book that can be used to learn Spring if I'm new to Spring? I thought 2nd Edition was not very useful for that purpose ... saw many examples without ever seeing a description of how it all fits together or explanation of why we were doing things a certain way.

Absolutely YES!

I started my Spring adventure reading Spring in Action 2.
It's a very good book: my first language is not english but the book is really well written, easy to understand, concepts are clear and well explained; also there are a lot of examples.
