Hi,

I would like to know whether there is anybody using a Linux distro with Hello World and who does not have problems with the pythoncard programs!? Problems such as the following:

I was able to install Hello World on Ubuntu 10.04.1 using tricky operations, see
http://www.manning-sandbox.com/thread.jspa?threadID=40019&tstart=0.

However, some pythoncard features such as Gauges and line width don't function properly:

* Virtual Pet: the Hunger, Happiness Health bars cannot be colored, all three just show Ubuntu's default desktop color. Irrespective of what I use with layout or resource editor

* Hangman's line thickness is very thin and cannot be changed.

Hello World's Windows installer did an excellent job, with WinXP Home none of these problems at all!

Cheers,

sandefan

Re: are there any Linux distros without pythoncard problems?
Regarding the installation, did you try the HelloWorld Linux installer?

I think the problems you listed are just how Pythoncard looks in Ubuntu. I don't know if there's anything you can do about it.

Re: are there any Linux distros without pythoncard problems?
Of course I did! But this did not work with Ubuntu. I found a work-around:

see also

A work-around, except for color and linewidth failure, that is, as described in my previous posting.

That is why I would like to know whether the pythoncard listings from your Hello World have been working properly in any Linux distro - Fedora, Mandriva, Open Suse, whatever?

Cheers to Warren and Carter,

P.S. It is not just that I cannot color the Gauges nor change line width; I am just frustrated that an open source program works beautifully in Windows but poorly in Linux smilie

Re: are there any Linux distros without pythoncard problems?
I couldn't sleep smilie before having tried OpeSuse 11.3 with a LiveCD: your Fedora installer did fine (after some minor modifications). Hangman hanged properly, but the Pythoncard linewidth problem was the same as with Ubuntu. Disappointed, I skipped VirtualPet and cursed Linux smilie
Apparently, pythoncard works best with Windows
