Following the instructions in Appendix B I discovered that my CentOS 5 system using the PGDG yum repo and RPMs would not allow me to create a database with utf8 encoding unless I used template0.

Is UTF8 encoding absolutely necessary?

Re: postgis_template encoding utf8?
Nope. You should be able to use any encoding. Just change the scripts we have if they reference it.

Re: postgis_template encoding utf8?
Thanks Regina. I was pretty sure it could be but wanted to make sure. I could re-build/-encode template1 but refer to leave it with the default settings.
