p. 46 says "You have to use SharePoint Designer 2010 if you are going to use the DataForm Web Part or customize list views using the XsltListView Web Part."

This is not true or at least it needs clarification. The SharePoint SDK has an example of customizing how the XsltListView Web Part displays fields that does not even mention SharePoint Designer: "How to: Customize the Rendering of a Field on a List View" (http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/ff606773.aspx)
