I just signed up for this forum and was wondering if this forum still gets
used and whether I should post a question or not. From what I can see no
messages have been posted since April and most of the messages are the only
ones in their threads with no feedback.

I think it's fair to say the author gave up on us on 9/30/98. It would have
been polite for him to post his intentions to move on.

Internet newsgroups are better.

This forum should be closed.

I still reference Brooks book. It's a good memory jogger. It glosses over
some key areas with a paragraph, like the datawindow resize service. He says,
"It works much the same way as the window resize service...", and not much
more. The book seemed to come out while PB 6 was coming out, so a chunk of it
seems rushed to explain/guess what is happening in the PB 6 PFC.

I recommend the book as a basic, simple to follow overview to the PFC.

The implementation of this forum, however, has been a dissapointment.

I did give up on this forum. I found it very difficult to keep up with and
several big things changed in my life. I am still around though and the email
that was in my book (rik@1313mockingbirdlane.com) still works. You can also
contact me at rik@rikbrooks.com.

The big problem that I had was that the forum has no way of notifying me when
there are new posts. That made it way too easy for me to forget to check in.

Still, I'm here.

I have never given up on PowerBuilder programmers. My site
http://www.1313mockingbirdlane.com/dojo has been up continually since 1994 and
I still answer questions put to me every single day. It's just the format of
this forum that I've found difficult to maintain.

Absolutely true. You get more than just one person's opinion.

I wouldn't have a problem with that. I would like it if my readers had my
email address though. I do answer questions.

Absolutely right. The book was meant as a memory jogger. You wouldn't believe
the flak I took because it wasn't a 'how-to' book.

PB6 wasn't out when I finished the book. I did the best that I could to get
Sybase to help me out with PB6 information, but I could only get the briefest
overviews. I tried but failed miserably. PowerBuilder was just then taking its
major turn to Jaguar and they didn't have a lot of time for PFC questions. - I
suppose -

Which is exactly what it was intended to be. You hit the nail on the head.

I forgot to mention that Sybase did the same thing to me on my DataWindow
book. They saved the HTML DataWindow until too late for me to write anything
worthwhile about it. I begged and pleaded but couldn't get anything more than
promotional information. So the final chapter of my DataWindow book is
hopelessly abbreviated.

That's a big problem when you deal with publishers. They have very real
deadlines. They work through book agents. The book agents get the books on the
shelves. When they give a date to those people the agents go out and start
selling - making promises to deliver on a certain date. If the publisher
misses that date then so do the book agents and egg is on everyone's face.

So the publishers tend to hold the author's feet to the fire. Too many missed
deadlines and the book agents won't work with the publisher anymore so you
have to understand the publisher's point of view.

Sybase has been through a lot of changes the last few years and that has led
to confusion that has really hurt authors. That's part of the reason that you
see so few books on Sybase products coming out any more. For example, during
the last month of the DataWindow book they finally came out with the PB7 user
interface, completely changed from the PB6. I had to go back and recapture
over 400 screen snapshots! That was a massive amount of work when I was going
through the very last stages of editing.

Oh well, that's life I suppose.
