Thanks for the compliment on the book.

I'm going to try a few things to solve your problem so it might take me a day
or so. I'm just writing this now to let you know that I got the message and am
working on it.

Help!!!

I am having a problem using the pfc linkage service. I have a window that
contains a master datawindow and also a tab control with 4 additional
datawindows on it. All of these datawindows contain different detail
information for a single client - name & address on 1, contact information on
another, and so on.

If I link these datawindows, then trigger the pfc_InsertRow for the master
datawindow, a new row is added to each of the detail datawindows, OK so far.
When I trigger the save, PFC tries to insert 5 rows into the database, instead
of inserting the master and updating with the data from the other datawindows.

I changed this window to use shared datawindows thinking it was just the
linkage service biting me again, and ran into a new problem. The required
column service is not activated for the shared datawindows, only for the
master.
Any required columns on the master datawindow are handled fine but I do not
get prompted for any required columns on the shared datawindows.

I hope this isn't too confusing so far but I have been banging my head with
this issue all week and would really appreciate any information you might be
able to provide to point me in a reasonable direction.

By the way, the book is great, I have only been using PFC 5.0 for about two
months now and your reference really comes in handy.

Thanks in advance

I've done everything that I can and I can't reproduce your problem. Truly I
can't figure out what you are doing wrong unless I can do it myself.

Rik,

I appreciate the effort. Are you saying that you were able to have a window
with multiple datawindows create one new row in a database. If you then it is
certainly something I am doing wrong. I will be happy to know that it can be
done. What happens when I link 4 datawindows and hit save, PFC inserts one row
in the database and then fails trying to insert the data from the second
datawindow into the database telling me that the key is empty. I use the Sql
Spy window to see what was happening behind the scenes and that is what I saw.
4 linked datawindows and one update statement and I fail trying to do 4
inserts. I must have something linked incorrectly. I will play around with it
some more and try to get some more useful information. Again thanks very much
I appreciate the help a great deal.

Rik,

I did think of something after I left the last note. The key field for the
table I am updating is an auto-increment column in the database. Could this be
what is throwing it off. Thanks Much!

You know, I was thinking about it, and I would still use the shared
datawindows. I would just find a way around the required columns. I might
handle thta manually, you know, with code in the shared datawindow controls.

I would suspect that. I don't like auto increment very much simply because I'm
a little obsessive and like to do things myself. At least then I would knwo
what's happening where.
