Question about how can I add a very simple interface to your current client????

It can be either in Swing or just command line.

Please HELP urgent!

Thanks for the kind praise. The client code in the book is designed to teach you how to build java code for instant messaging. Unfortunately it is missing a lot of code regarding error checking, exception handling, etc in order to keep it simple (and easier to understand). It's a painful trade off between readability and correctness.

My recommendation is to use a 'real' Java client library for actual client implementation. My company, Jive Software, has created an open source Java library called Smack for just such use (the design is a polished version of what you saw in the book). There is an active developer community using the software and it's constantly being improved. Please check it out:
