GINA page 209 indicates that for properties, you can leave out the * from the spread-dot operator.
This means to me that: list.property should be equivalent to list*.property.

In fact if I do the example on the next page:
println invoices.items
gives (a list of 3 LineItems):
[LineItem@93dee9, LineItem@fabe9, LineItem@df6ccd]

which is different from
println invoices*.items
which gives (a list of 2 Lists):
[[LineItem@93dee9, LineItem@fabe9], [LineItem@df6ccd]]

this looks like a bug in the Groovy version you are using. Please post this to user@groovy.codehaus.org. You will most likely be asked to raise a JIRA issue.
