When running Perl on Unix systems, you can always run the <TT>ls -l</tt> command
via <tt>system</tt> or command interpolation to obtain a file listing. To demonstrate
techniques for achieving OS-portability, pages 217-218 show how to obtain <tt>ls</tt>-like
reports by harvesting file-data from Perl's <tt>stat</tt> function.

But that script becomes much more valuable with certain enhancements, such as
error checking and symbolic link handling, using techniques covered in Part 2 of the book.
