Should be:

A relationship called A-B is many-to-many when multiple B objects can be referenced by multiple A objects.

Regarding your comment about,

"A relationship called A-B is many-to-many when a B object can be referenced by multiple A objects."

The context for that statement is where A has a collection of Bs, i.e. an A references multiple Bs. So your proposed changed is a little redundant. However, perhaps this could be written more clearly.
